Appointment of Nehemiah Brown as a Justice of the Peace for Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Document opens to show certification that Brown has appeared for examination before two Commissioners of the Commonwealth. 1 horizontal, 2 vertical fold creases. Lightly toned around edges. Top edge lightly ragged and chipped. Corners lightly creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top left corner. Otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by 4¼x6½ cabinet card photograph. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso states that the card is "from Mrs. Bullock". Lightly toned. Bottom right corner creased. Otherwise fine condition. ALEXANDER HAMILTON BULLOCK (1816-1882), a lawyer and state legislator, helped organize the New England Emigrant Aid Society in 1855, to encourage anti-slavery settlements in Kansas after the Kansas-Nebraska vote left admission of Kansas as a slave or free state to a popular vote. He was Mayor of Worcester (1859-1861), Speaker of the Massachusetts House (1862-1865) and Governor 1866-1869. OLIVER WARNER (d. 1885), a clergyman, librarian and politician, served 9 terms as Massachusetts Secretary of State (1858-1876). The Republican Party declined to re-nominate him for a tenth term, even though he had been the Party's biggest vote getter in 1872. Two items.
