ALEXANDER J. DALLAS
The concluding paragraphs of an autograph letter declining an invitation
Autograph Letter Fragment Signed: "A.J. Dallas", as Secretary of Treasury and Secretary of War. 1p, 8x3¾. No place, 1815 June 22. In Part: He declines an invitation to a Democratic dinner "because I doubt whether I can get to Philadelphia on the 4th of July…." Alexander James Dallas (1759-1817), who had been born in Jamaica, was Madison's U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1814-1816) and Acting Secretary of War in 1815. Facing a treasury depleted as a result of the War of 1812, Dallas was instrumental in the establishment of the Second Bank of the United States, chartered by Congress in 1816. At the time of this letter, Dallas, a prominent Philadelphia attorney, was Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (1791-1801). He was then appointed as U.S. District Attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania by President Jefferson (1801 until his appointment to Madison's Cabinet). Fragile, creased, soiled and worn. Worn irregular edges. Lightly stained. Nail head-size hole in between text at lower left. Folds do not touch signature.
