ALEXANDER KIRKLAND
Seated in suit and tie, inscribed in person to collector Saul
Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Cordially/Alexander
Kirkland". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature:
December 9, 1935. Alexander Kirkland (1901 to possibly 1980) had 11
prominent film roles between 1931 and 1934, including Almost Married
(1932), for which he also wrote the screenplay. He was seen in A Face in the
Crowd (1957), and in a few TV appearances. Kirkland, who was married to
Gypsy Rose Lee from 1942 to 1944, wrote short stories, several published in
national magazines, and collected art, owning a gallery for a time in Palm
Beach. He disappeared from public view in the late 1950s. Saul Goodman
(1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and
theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other
autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy
photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn. Ink stamp
on verso. Unknown stain at center not effecting signature. Otherwise, fine
condition.
