ALEXANDER RAMSEY
As US Senator, he signs an autograph note dating his years as Minnesota
Governor.
Autograph Note signed: "Alex. Ramsey", 4x2½ piece of paper attached to
4½x3 piece of pink paper (two surfaces). No place, 1873 May 1. In full:
"Was Gov. of Terr. of Minn. from April 2, 1849 to May 15, 1853.
Was Gov. of State of Minn. Jan. 2, 1860 to July 10, 1863. Truly yours".
Alexander Ramsey (1815-1903) represented Pennsylvania in the US House
as a Whig 1843-1847). President Taylor appointed him the first territorial
governor of Minnesota (1849-1853). After Minnesota became a state, it
elected Ramsey its second Governor (1860-1863). In this capacity, he became the
first Governor to commit troops to the Union Army. He served in the US
Senate, as a Republican this time (1863-1875), and as Secretary of War
under President Hayes (1879-1881). Lightly rippled and soiled. Otherwise,
fine condition.
