ALEXANDER CALDER
ALS discussing an upcoming show, and a trip to Carnaval in Rio
Autograph Letter signed: "Sandy Calder", 1 page, 8½x11. Roxbury, Connecticut, 1960 February 13. On stationery with his ink stamp return address to "Dear Lawrences" . In full: "Here is the Host's address in Japan. He's a Dane, & Jeanne American (daughter of an old friend of ours). Did you contact Iwakuma? I am afraid you'll have to wait a little bit, for Louisa & I are off on 24 Feb to Rio, for the Carnaval, & will be back in 2 weeks for my show at Perls, March 15". Alexander "Sandy" Calder (1898-1976), generally regarded as one of the 20th century's most innovative artists, first gained fame for his wire sculptures, including his miniature circus figures. Influenced by European abstract artists, Calder began to experiment with motion, resulting in the works for which he is most noted: the mobile and the stabile. His giant stabiles and mobiles grace dozens of public buildings and plazas worldwide. Calder also created stone, wood and bronze sculptures, drawings and paintings. Calder had a long association with Brazil, beginning with his first visit in 1948. Two horizontal mailing folds. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
