ALEXANDER CALDER. ALS: "Sandy Calder", 2¾p, 8¼x10¾. Roxbury, Connecticut, 1959 November 15. With original envelope, addressed by Calder to: "Lee Lawrence, 159 King's Point, Great Neck, N.Y." Begins: "Dear Lee and Dick". In full: "In Israel I think know a man named Katz - hes (sic) American, & in charge of some 'modern museum' which is perhaps outside the city. In Greece I used to know historian of art & journalist Angelo Procopiou Miniati 44, Athines tel: 90888 I haven't seen him for a long time, & he may be disgusted with me because I have never shown up (but I might) Marino (& Marina) Marini are Piazza Mirabella 2 Milano go to him 'de ma part' I know him well. In summer he has a place called (something) del Mar - you had better write him and find out where he is. Although we could find no reference to an exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1959, the Gallery held a retrospect of Calder's works in 1963-1964. At the time of this letter, Calder had been affiliated with Perls Gallery in New York City for five years, and both that gallery and the Galerie Maeght in Paris would hold exhibitions of his works annually. In the year of this letter, Calder created one of his stabiles, Stabile Noir, and he had entered into a period in which he executed large-scale commissioned works, such as La Spirale, created for UNESCO in Paris in 1958. Alexander "Sandy" Calder (1898-1976), the son of sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder, first gained fame for his wire sculptures, including his miniature circus figures. He is most noted for his mobiles and stabiles. Letter is lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold nicks the upper loop of the "C" in Calder. Ink smudged at some words (all legible). Envelope is torn at lower blank edge, at right edge for removal of letter affects "y" in NY. Envelope is lightly worn and soiled. Overall, fine condition. Two items.
