The American sculptor penned his signature and this handwritten letter regarding the
death of a friend
Autograph Letter Signed: "Stirling Calder". 6x7. Dated June 24, 1942. One page. Letterhead
from Brooklyn, New York. Message in Full: “I read of your father's death, and have been very
near it myself. Still too weak to go to see the priests. I might want one or two, but as I cannot call
at your studio, will have to let it go. Thanks again”. Noted American Beaux-Arts sculptor
Alexander Stirling Calder (1870-1945) designed figurative bronzes for public places,
including the Swann Memorial Fountain in Logan Square in Philadelphia and the Fountain of
Energy, the centerpiece of San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. Calder, the son
of sculptor Alexander Milne Calder (1846-1923), was the father of Alexander "Sandy"
Calder (1898-1976), known for his mobiles and stabiles. Pencil markings in unknown hand
in top-left corner. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
