A handwritten and signed letter from the sculptor
ALS: "Stirling Calder" on verso of 1-cent postcard, 5½x3¼. Brooklyn, New York, 1942 July
5. Addressed by Calder to: "Mrs Patricia MacDonald Hatchings, 576 Fifth Ave., New York
City". In full: "It was kind of you to send the proofs, and I thank you. As you say, the large head is
best. It might be an object of interest to some person, but I am out of favor with myself and cannot
afford it." Noted American Beaux-Arts sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder (1870-1945)
designed figurative bronzes for public places, including the Swann Memorial Fountain in
Logan Square in Philadelphia and the Fountain of Energy, the centerpiece of San Francisco's
1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. Calder, the son of sculptor Alexander Milne Calder
(1846-1923), was the father of Alexander "Sandy" Calder (1898-1976), known for his
mobiles and stabiles. Lightly soiled, postal markings touch 2 lines of writing. Paper clip rust
stain at lower right margin of verso, which has pencil note (unknown hand) at upper left
margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
