Extremely rare signature from the French author and dramatist on a
three-page letter
Autograph letter signed: "A Dumas fils", 4x5¼, 3 pages
(integral leaf). In French, untranslated. The illegitimate son of the French
writer, Alexandre Dumas fils (1824-1895) wrote novels and plays. Among
his most famous was La Dame aux camelias, known in English as
Camille. The novel (1848) was written as a play (1852) and later made
into a film. Such legendary actresses as Sarah Bernhardt and Greta Garbo played
the story's leading lady, Marguerite Gautier, a Paris courtesan who finds true
love. The work was the inspiration for Verdi's opera, La Traviata.
Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Paper loss on verso of last page.
Lightly toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Ink blot to beneath Dumas'
signature, bottom right. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
