Photograph signed: "Alexis Rassine" at lower left. B/w 6x8 photograph affixed to 8x10 stock - 2 surfaces. Lithuanian born dancer, Alexis Rassine (1919-1992) studied dance in South Africa before moving to Paris at age 17 where he made his stage debut at the nightclub Bal Tabarin. Unable to get into the ballet, he made his way to London where he was able to train and achieve a fair amount of success with the Anglo-Polish Ballet and Sadler's Wells Ballet at a time when male dancers were scarce. After the War, he left Sadler's Wells Ballet and guested with Walter Gore's London Ballet and abroad. He retired in Sussex and occasionally taught. Poor contrast but still readable. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower right. Lightly creased-most not visible head on. Otherwise, fine condition.
