8½x11. No place, 1959 September 4. In letter form on letterhead of The
Theatre Guild, New York, New York. The actress agrees to appear in an unnamed
production sponsored by U.S. Steel. Begins: "Dear Alexis Smith".
In part: "This will confirm our arrangements. You hereby agree to
render your personal services to act in the telecast referred to in the attached
Standard AFTRA Engagement Contract for a Single Television Broadcast
[contract not present]. You will receive no less than 2nd co-star billing
above the title. When requested, you will furnish photographs cleared for
use...The term 'Sponsor' includes the subsidiaries and affiliates of United
States Steel Corporation." Also signed by a representative of The
Theatre Guild. Smith appeared in "The Last Autumn" on the U.S. Steel
Hour on November 18, 1959. That year, she also guest starred on the TV
series, Adventures in Paradise, and made one feature film, The Young
Philadelphians. Dancer and stage and screen actress Alexis Smith
(1921-1993), born Gladys Smith in British Columbia, Canada, made her film debut
in 1940's The Lady with Red Hair, and steadily progressed from "B" movies
to leading lady status opposite such stars as Errol Flynn (who was
best man at her 1944 wedding to actor Craig Stevens), Charles Boyer and
Frederic March. Her long list of feature films includes Gentleman Jim
(1942), The Adventures of Mark Twain (1944), Rhapsody in Blue
(1945), Of Human Bondage (1946) and The Age of Innocence (1993,
her last film), and Smith also found success on the Broadway stage, winning a
1972 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of
Phyllis Rogers Stone in Follies and being nominated in 1979 for a
Tony in the same category for Platinum. She also appeared on the
small screen, starring in made-for-TV movies and making guest appearances on
series ranging from anthology shows of the 1950s to Cheers (1990),
including a recurring role on Dallas (1984, 1990). Lightly
