The actress agrees to appear in an unnamed production sponsored by U.S. Steel. Begins: "Dear Alexis Smith". In part: "This will confirm our arrangements. Dancer and stage and screen actress Alexis Smith (1921-1993), born Gladys Smith in British Columbia, Canada, made her film debut in 1940's The Lady with Red Hair, and steadily progressed from "B" movies to leading lady status opposite such stars as Errol Flynn (who was best man at her 1944 wedding to actor Craig Stevens), Charles Boyer and Frederic March. Her long list of feature films includes Gentleman Jim (1942), The Adventures of Mark Twain (1944), Rhapsody in Blue (1945), Of Human Bondage (1946) and The Age of Innocence (1993, her last film), and Smith also found success on the Broadway stage, winning a 1972 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Phyllis Rogers Stone in Follies and being nominated in 1979 for a Tony in the same category for Platinum. She also appeared on the small screen, starring in made-for-TV movies and making guest appearances on series ranging from anthology shows of the 1950s to Cheers (1990), including a recurring role on Dallas (1984, 1990).
