Caine as a womanizer who gradually comes to recognize the consequences of his
lifestyle. Shelly Winters played a similarly promiscuous woman who does to Alfie
(Caine) what he has done to many others. The film was remade in 2004, with Jude
Law in the title role. Alfie garnered MICHAEL CAINE the first of
his four Oscar nominations for Best Actor: Sleuth, Educating
Rita,. He has won the statuette twice as Best Supporting Actor: Hannah
and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules. SHELLEY WINTERS
(1920-2006) also has two Best Supporting Actor awards on her shelf, for
The Diary of Anne Frank and A Patch of Blue, These were sandwiched
between Oscar nominations for A Place in the Sun and The Poseidon
