ALFRED AUSTIN
Austin's 4 page letter from 1899 in correspondence with a publisher.
Autograph letter signed: "Alfred Austin" and "Austin" in text, 3p, 4¼x6¾. Ashford, Kent (England), 1899 December 6. On personal embossed letterhead to "Dear Sir". In full: "On second thoughts, I have reached the conclusion that it will be better to leave to you the choice of a day for publishing "Spartan Mothers," in case you wish to publish it; it shall not appear in England until you do so. If you will be good enough to send me a telegram with the following effect, as many days before you publish it as possible. 'Austin. Ashford. Kent England. The Date.[illegible] saying 'twenty-third', 'thirtieth' or however it may be)" And [3 words illegible] deduct the cost which would I think be only five English shillings from the £10 honorarium. I am yours faithfully." Originally trained in the law, Alfred Austin (1835-1913), who later edited the "National Review", followed Lord Tennyson as Poet Laureate of England (1896-1913). Major themes in his poetry include a love of nature and strong patriotism. Austin had first came to prominence with The Season: A Satire (1861). In 1870, he wrote The Poetry of the Period, a criticism that attacked Tennyson and other poets of the day. Mounting adhesive at upper and lower edges show through slightly on signature pages, else fine condition.
