The editor sends a note for a plant nursery (dated 1907).
Autograph note signed: "Alfred Austin", 1p, 4½x6½. Swinford
Old Manor, Ashford, Kent, 1907 February 26. On embossed letterhead to
unknown recipient. In full: "Please send me good plants of the list
enclosed. The number of plants is marked on it." Handwritten
postscript: "I send Postal order." Originally trained in the law,
Alfred Austin (1835-1913), who later edited the "National Review", followed
Lord Tennyson as Poet Laureate of England (1896-1913). Major themes in his
poetry include a love of nature and strong patriotism. Austin had first came to
prominence with The Season: A Satire (1861). In 1870, he wrote
The Poetry of the Period, a criticism that attacked Tennyson and
other poets of the day. Mid-horizontal fold at upper loops of the "A" and "l" in
Alfred and the "A" and "t" of Austin. Slightly soiled, pencil erasures at lower
margin. Overall, fine condition.
