Photograph signed (on verso): "+ Alfred Car Bengsch", in blue
ink, B/w 4x5. Alfred Bengsch (1921-1979) attended the Superior School
of Philosophy and Theology, leaving school to serve for the German army in
World War II. During the war, he was wounded and captured by the United
States Army, eventually returning to Germany to continue his theological
studies, being ordained a priest in 1950. He then did pastoral work for a
number of years in Berlin, also teaching at two seminaries. In 1959, he was
appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Berlin, and later in 1967 was elevated to a
cardinal. Corners and edges slightly worn. Toned. Fine condition.
