Signed 1903 letter of the Tasmanian Attorney General responding to an autograph collector. Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "Alfred Dobson", in black ink, 1 page 7¼x9. London, England, January 27, 1903. On his letterhead as Agent General for Tasmania to England, to "Dear Miss Susman", Octavia Susman, Hobart, Tasmania, in full: "I duly received your letter of the 19th.. August last. I have been long time in obtaining the promised autographs for you, and I fear you may think I have forgotten all about the matter. The fact is however that Mr. Freeman Murray has been very busy for some months past with the affairs of the British Empire League. At length, however he managed to make a search among his papers, and I have to-day received from him a number of very interesting autographs. One of them is that of Lord Avebury, formerly the celebrated Sir John Lubbock. I am sure that you will be very pleased with them. I congratulate you upon having already obtained such a good collection. I have not yet been able to obtain the autograph of Mr. Joseph Chamberlain. You know he is a very busy man and is a present away in South Africa and one can hardly trouble him about such matters. However, should I happen at any time to obtain this signature I will send it to you.,". Alfred Dobson (1849-1908) was elected Solicitor General of Tasmania in 1887. Previously he served as Attorney-General in the Fysh Ministry (1877-1888), leader of the opposition (1883-1885) and Speaker from 1885-1887. In 1901 he was made Agent-General for Tasmania. Normal mailing folds. Edges and corners slightly creased Toned. Light haloing. Adhesive at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
