ALFRED HERTZ
After a sentence in German, the orchestra conductor switches to
English, apparently soliciting a handwriting analysis.
Autograph Letter: "Alfred Hertz", 2 pages, 6x9¼.
Cincinnati, 1903 April 21. On letterhead of the St. Nicholas Hotel.
After a greeting and opening sentence in German (translated in part), Hertz
continues in English: "[German portion] "I write you in German,
because it goes more fluently for me". Continuing in English: "I
don't know if you have any interest in German letters. I write this in
English. You would oblige me extremely if you would send me your opinion about
my character to New York Metropolitan Opera House c/o Mr. Heinrich Courier.
Yours truly". German-born conductor Alfred Hertz (1872-1942)
conducted Wagnerian operas at the Metropolitan, before becoming director of
the San Francisco Symphony (1915-1930). Digitally re-mastered recordings
of the San Francisco Symphony with Hertz conducting have been released to
celebrate the 100th anniversary of that orchestra (2010-2011). Normal
mailing folds. Ink smeared in some places, but legible. Slightly toned.
Otherwise, fine condition.
