Biography signed: "Alfred Kastler," 8¼x4¾ (separated into two
halves, 4x4¾). In French. Alfred Kastler (1902-1984) was a French
physicist born in Alsace, a province transferred from Germany to France at the
end of WWI, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1966 for the discovery and
development of optical methods for studying Hertzian resonances in atoms. This
research into "optical pumping" was important in the development of lasers.
Kastler studied at Paris' École Normale Supérieure in 1920 and, after
serving as a science teacher at Bordeaux and Clermont-Ferrand in France and
Louvain in Belgium, returned there to teach from 1941 to 1968. He then served as
director of research at the National Center of Scientific Research until his
retirement in 1972. Completely separated down the center. Slightly toned. Slight
creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
