ALFRED LORD TENNYSON
Alfred Lord Tennyson sends a third person autograph letter saying
that the letter was already sent and how.
Third-person Autograph Letter Signed: "Mr. Alfred Tennyson",
1p, 4¼x7. No place, 1865 October 10. On embossed Farringford
letterhead; black-bordered mourning paper to Sir A. Clifford. In full:
"Mr. Alfred Tennyson presents his compliments to Sir Augustus Clifford &
begs to inform him that the letter was dispatched by the next post to Queen Emma
at Capn. Simeon's, Hursley, Winchester". ADMIRAL SIR AUGUSTUS
CLIFFORD (1788-1877) was 1st Baronet. In 1850, English poet ALFRED LORD
TENNYSON (1809-1892) wrote the elegy In Memoriam, which became a
favorite of Queen Victoria, who appointed Tennyson Poet Laureate the same year.
Tennyson also wrote a series of historical dramas: Queen Mary (1875),
Harold (1876) and Becket (1884). He also won acclaim with such
lyric poems as Morte d'Arthur (1842) and Charge of the Light
Brigade (1855). In 1885, Tennyson published one of his most noted works,
The Idylls of the King. When this letter was written, Tennyson was
mourning his mother, who died in 1865. Farringford was Tennyson's
home. Lightly creased and soiled. Pinhead-size hole at center blank area.
