ALFRED MANN
The music professor and author signed this handwritten letter that he sent to
a friend
Autograph Letter Signed: “Alfred” in blue ink. Sent to “John”. 8½x11. Dated
March 20, 1965. In Part: “I am deeply touched to receive the lovely little book of
dutch carols with your recitation.” Alfred Mann (1917-2006) was a music
educator who is most famous as an expert in counterpoint, a musical tenet
that involves the use of multiple vocalists in one piece. The essential text on
counterpoint, Gradus ad Parnassum, was written in 1725 by Johann Joseph
Fux. However, it was written in Latin and had never been translated into another
language. Mann made it his life's work to translate the majority of it so that
future classical composers would not have to understand a now-dead
language. He taught at Eastman University for many years, beginning in 1980.As a student, he was forced to flee Germany and subsequently Italy before WWII.
After obtaining a visa to the United States and completing some of his
studies, he served in the United States Army for a few years. Mailing creases.
Mounting adhesive stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
