ALFRED REED
Three handwritten bars of music from Reed's 1978 composition Prelude and Capriccio, signed in 1979
Autograph musical quotation signed "Alfred Reed/Sept. '79". 8¼x3¼, on music scale paper. Titled: "'Prelude and Cappriccio'". These three bars of music appear to be from Reed's composition for band Prelude and Cappriccio, which he composed in 1978. Reed (1921-2005, born in Manhattan, New York) was an American composer and conductor. A prolific composer, Reed penned over 200 published works for concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, chorus and chamber. He began playing with small hotel bands in the Catskill Mountains. His interests turned to composing and arranging and, in 1938, he joined New York's Radio Workshop as a composer, arranger and assistant conductor. Reed was assigned to the 529th Army Air Corps Band during World War II, where he spent three and a-half years and composed over 100 of his compositions. After the war, he attended Juilliard before becoming staff composer and arranger for NBC and then ABC. Reed became conductor of the Baylor Symphony Orchestra and executive director of music publisher Hansen Publications in 1955, then a professor of music at the University of Miami from 1966 to 1993. His compositions include Russian Christmas Music (written in 11 days in 1994), his Armenian Dances (Part I in 1972, Part II in 1977) and El Camino Real (1985). Left edge is perforated. Lightly toned and stained. Bottom edge is irregular. Light dent in upper right corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
