ALFRED SMEE. ALS: "Dr L/Alfred Smee", 1p, 3¼x3¾. 7 Circus, 1845 December 31. To unknown recipient. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "Will you send me 'Priests Women & [illegible]' translated from the French Yours [illegible]". Alfred Smee (1818-1877) was a British surgeon, metallurgist, inventor and author. Appointed surgeon to the Bank of England and the Central Opthalmic Institution, Smee, a Fellow of the Royal Society (1841), initiated educational lectures at the London Institution and he invented "gum and chalk" splints. Smee, who was awarded the Isis medal for his battery, published a landmark work, Elements of Electro-Metallurgy, which dealt with plating metals, in 1840, and he was also the author of Elements of Electro-Biology (1849). Ink slightly smudged at the "A" of Alfred. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the second "e" in Smee. Lightly soiled. File hole at mid-portion touches one word of writing. Overall, fine condition.
