Autograph Letter signed: "Alfred Wigan", 2 pages, (integral leaf), 4½x7. Little Campden House, Campden Hill, Kensington W [London], 1871 October 9. To "Dear Mrs. Russell", in full: "I am afraid we shall be too busy in our preparations and probably to heady with our [?] fatigue to take the great pleasure you are so kind as to offer us; but 'we'll try, Baillie, we'll try.' Accept my thanks for your kind compliance with my request, believe me yours faithfully". English actor and theatre managerAlfred Sydney Wigan (1814-1878) was the elder brother of actor/playwright Alfred Wigan and the husband of actress Leonora Pincott. Originally a singer billing himself as Sidney Wigan, he made his London acting debut in 1834. He played in such prestigious acting companies as Covent Garden and the Haymarket. In 1848, he took part in the first Royal Command performance for Queen Victoria (The Merchant of Venice), in a cast that included the Kean's and the Keeley's. He managed several theatres, including the Olympic, St James's and Queen's, and attracting stars of the caliber of Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. He gave his final performance at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1874. Normal mailing fold. Lightly toned at top edge. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
