ALGER HISS. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Alger Hiss/Jan 22,
1979", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover honoring the United Nations International
Year for Human Rights, 6-cent stamp affixed, postmarked United Nations,
New York, November 22, 1968, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Alger Hiss (1904-1996)
served in the State Department from 1935-1947. He was Executive Secretary of the
Dumbarton Oaks Conference, a technical adviser at the Yalta Conference (FDR,
Churchill, Stalin) and Secretary-General of the United Nations founding
convention. In 1948, confessed former Communist spy Whittaker Chambers accused
Hiss of giving him military secrets in the 1930s to send to Russia. Hiss denied
the charges during an appearance before the House Committee on Un-American
Activities (Congressman Richard Nixon was a committee member), but he was
brought to trial in 1949 and charged with perjury for denying Chambers'
accusations. The trial ended with a hung jury. Hiss was retried and, on January
21, 1950, he was found guilty. After serving three years and eight months of a
five-year sentence, he was paroled. Hiss continued to declare his innocence
until his death. Fine condition.
