ALICE MARBLE
Signed photograph of the tennis star smiling into the camera
Printed Photograph Signed: "Alice Marble". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 4½x6½ (one surface). Captioned in lower margin. Alice Marble (1913-1990) won 18 tennis grand slam events between 1936 and 1940 (5 singles, 6 women's doubles and 7 mixed doubles). She was named to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1964. After her husband, a pilot, was killed in combat over Germany in World War II, Marble volunteered for a dangerous spy mission, contacting a former lover in Switzerland, a banker who possessed German financial information. The mission ended when she was shot in the back by a Nazi agent. Marble recovered from her injury, but declined to talk about the mission until the posthumous publication of her autobiography, Courting Danger. Fine condition.
