The wife of accomplished sculptor, Max Kalish, signs this handwritten letter mentioning the death of her husband
Autograph letter signed: "Alice N. Kalish/(Mrs. Max)" in blue ink. 8½x11. November 21, 1945, written to "Dear Captain Ward" on letterhead of Mrs. Max Kalish, Cleveland, Ohio. In full: "Your very interesting noted finally reached me here in Cleveland. You see, Mr. Kalish passed away very suddenly in spring, and I have moved to Cleveland with my small sons. Our belongings are all in storage, so that after the first of the year, when I hope to get suitable living quarters. I shall certainly be able to send you an autograph clipped from some papers. In the meantime, please accept this folder which explains in detail more about the Collection which you saw in the Smithsonian Institute. Lots of luck in your journey back to good health. Very sincerely". Alice Neuman Kalish was the wife of Max Kalish, the Jewish-American sculptor. The two were married in 1927. He won a scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Art, graduating at 19 and winning first prize for life modeling. Kalish created "Rebecca and Judas Maccabeus", which was judged the best piece of sculpture ever exhibited in the annual student show. After studying in Europe he returned to Cleveland and eventually became a highly acclaimed artist. After his death in 1945, the Cleveland Museum of Art gave a memorial exhibition of his work jointly with the paintings of Alex Warshawsky. Toned. Lightly creased. Normal mailing folds.
