ALICE WILLIAMSON. ALS: "Alice Williamson", 4p, front and verso, 6½x9½. Châlet Des Pins, Cap Martin, no year January 1. To "Ladies Home Journal" publisher Edward Bok. In full: "Many thanks for your letter about a next Christmas suggestion. I've been thinking over the idea for a few days, and I don't know whether you will approve of my thought or not, for my one inspiration on the subject is a mystery story of Christmas time. But the worst of it is, its (sic) too big a mystery for a single number. It would have to be a serial of three numbers, better still, six. It is a very good mystery, this idea of mine [or so I think] about a charming and rich young girl who disappears just as she is supposed to be going home from boarding school or college, for the Christmas holidays - of course there's love in it as well as mystery. I fancy, though, you meant something complete in one number! But I don't believe you would give space enough to one story in even a Christmas number, for this - though it might perhaps be done in 12,000 words if one had to. But perhaps you would let me know if that idea is of any good. It is my only one - up to date! Thank you so much for 'The Ladies Home Journal,' which always comes, and is wonderful. I was so sorry - and so was my husband - that you and Mr. Wylie couldn't come and see us last summer in England. Very kind regards - Yours Sincerely". Handwritten postscript: "Happy New Year wishes!" ALICE MURIEL LIVINGSTON WILLIAMSON (1869-1933) wrote over 40 mysteries, many in conjunction with her husband, Charles Norris Williamson. A number of their novels, including The House of the Last Court and Women in Grey, were made into feature films. Pulitzer Prize-winning author (The Americanization of Edward Bok, 1920) EDWARD BOK (1863-1930) was the publisher of "The Ladies Home Journal" from 1889-1919. Under his leadership, the magazine became the world's first to have one million subscribers. Mid-vertical fold. Slightly soiled on verso of integral leaf. Fine condition.
