ALICIA MARKOVA
Alicia Markova signs a black and white publicity photograph of her leaning
against a pillar in a ballet pose.
Photograph signed: "Alicia Markova". B/w, 3½x5½. English prima
ballerina Dame Alicia Markova (1910-2004), born Lilian Alice Marks, joined
Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Monte Carlo at the age of 14. It was
Diaghilev who "Russified" her name, as there was a prejudice at the time
that the best ballerinas were Russian. Best remembered for Giselle
(filmed in 1952), The Dying Swan and Les Sylphides, Markova, who
was billed as "The Miniature Pavlova", thrilled audiences around the
world. She helped to found the Ballet Club, the Vic Wells Ballet
and the Markova-Dolin Ballet in Britain, and Markova would later form
her own company, Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet) in 1950.
After retiring from dancing in 1963 after surgery, Markova became a teacher and
traveled worldwide to direct ballet companies. Lightly creased and worn at
corners. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Overall, fine
condition.
