ALINE B. SAARINEN
The journalist and art critic signs this typed letter apologizing for keeping the recipient's photographs and explaining that her work is going slowly
Typed letter signed: "Aline B. Saarinen" in black ink. 8½x11. Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, June 23, 1960. In part: "Dear Mrs. Watkins, Please, please forgive me for not having returned sooner the charming pictures of your mother. I did intend to do so before I went to Breece..... and here they still are. [...] Research progresses slowly, slowly--- there is so much to do when one hopes to resurrect an entire era. But I am going ahead, even at turtle's pace." Aline Bernstein Saarinen (1914-1972) was a well-known critic of art and architecture in the United States, an author and a television journalist. Aline became managing editor of Art News magazine from 1946 to 1948. Then from 1948 to 1953 she was associate art editor and critic at the New York Times, and published articles on art and cultural trends in various magazines. Her profile of Eero Saarinen (architect behind the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO), titled "Now Saarinen the Son", appeared in the New York Times Magazine on 23 April 1953. She married Saarinen in 1954, and continued writing for the Times as an associate art critic. In 1957 Aline was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship with which she wrote the best-selling book The Proud Possessors, a collection of biographies of American art collectors. In the 1960s she appeared on multiple television shows, covering topics from art and criticism, to birth control and abortion. Lightly toned. Horizontal and vertical creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
