Autograph Letter signed:"Alison Skipworth", 2 pages (front and verso), 6x9½. Klaw Theater, New York City, undated, but c. 1921. To "Dear Mr. Miller", in full: ""Shall you have time to see 'The Lillies of the Field' this trip? I am still anxious to play in London if you can ever 'see me' in any of your productions. Yours sincerely". Skipworth (1863-1952, born Allison Mary Elliot Margaret Groom in London, Great Britain) got into acting to support her starving-artist husband. Her first roles were as eye candy on the London stage, but she grew as an actress and, by 1908, was co-starring in a production of The Prisoner of Zenda. Skipworth became a formidable comic and character actress, often taking on roles of hoity-toity matriarchswith over 50 movie appearances between 1912 and 1938, most them in the 1930s, and over 40 Broadway appearances between 1900 and 1942. Among her movie roles were with Mae West in Night After Night (1932) and with W. C. Fields in If I Had a Million (1932) and Tillie and Gus (1933), in the female lead in Madame Racketeer (1932) and opposite Polly Moran in Two Wise Maids (1937) and Ladies in Distress (1938). Lillies of the Field, a play unrelated to the later film of the same name, played at the Klaw Theater from October 4, 1921 to February 1922. Horizontal fold creases. Paper and adhesive residue (previous mounting) at top margin. Corners creased and worn. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
