ALLAN CUNNINGHAM
The nineteenth-century Scottish poet and author signs his name in
black ink
Signature: "Allan Cunningham" in black ink 2½x½ clipping
affixed to 5x3 card. Allan Cunningham (1784-1842) was a Scottish poet
and author. Raised as a stonemason's apprentice, but learned in his spare
time by reading old Scottish ballads and writing imitations; in 1809 he
collected ballads for Robert Hartley Cromek's Remains of Nithsdale and
Galloway Song, including some of his own works. He became friends with
literary figures such as Walter Scott and Hogg, eventually moving to London to
work as a parliamentary reporter and journalist till 1814, when he became clerk
of the works in the studio of the sculptor Francis Chantrey. Cunningham would
write many books, which include: three novels, a life of Sir David Wilkie, a
Lives of Eminent British Painters, Sculptors, and Architects
(1829-1833), Sir Marmaduke Maxwell (1820), and The King
of the Peak (1822). Toned. Soiled. Irregularly cut. Creased. Otherwise,
