ALLAN SHIVERS
Writing to a special education teacher, the former Texas Governor touts his own record in that field.
Typed Letter signed: "Allan Shivers", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Austin, Texas, 1972 May 30. On his letterhead as Chairman of the Board, The Austin National Bank, to J. L. Pruitt, Clute, Texas. In full: "I appreciate your letter of May 26 and congratulate you on your work as a counselor in the field of special education. It was my privilege during the time I was governor to inaugurate the vastly improved program in this field, and I have watched it grow with pride. I wish for you and your students the very best of everything in the future. Sincerely". Allan Shivers (1907-1985) was Governor of Texas (1949-1957). His 7½ years were the longest continuous service by a Texas Governor until that record was eclipsed by Rick Perry in 2008. Shivers, a leader of the conservative faction of Texas Democrats, supported Dwight D. Eisenhower over Adlai Stevenson in the 1952 Presidential election. Ike became only the second Republican Presidential candidate to carry the Lone Star State. Shivers was an important figure in Texas' transition from a solid Democratic to a solid Republican state.
