ALLEN D. CANDLER and WILLIAM HENRY WADSWORTH The congressmen from Georgia and Kentucky, respectively, pen their names (one on front and the other on verso) on this slip of paper Signatures: “A D Candler/ Gainesville/ Ga” and “W.H. Wadsworth/ Maysville,/ Ky.” Both in iron gall ink, 7¼x2¾. ALLEN DANIEL CANDLER (1834-1910) was a Georgia politician. He served both as a congressman and as the 56th Governor of Georgia. Before launching his political career, Candler fought on the side of the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War, losing an eye in Jonesboro. After the war, Candler worked as a farmer. He was active first in local politics, and then in state politics. Eventually he came to serve in the U.S. House as part of the 48th Congress. He became governor in 1898. Candler's two terms in office were marked by decreased spending, but also by blatant racial intolerance that oftentimes culminated in violence, which Candler did little to assuage. Politician WILLIAM HENRY WADSWORTH (1821-1893) was a United States Representative from Kentucky, whose first term coincided with the American Civil War (1861-1865); a Unionist, Wadsworth served as an aide to General Nelson in the Battle of Ivy Mountain during the war. He also served as a U.S. commissioner to Mexico for President Grant in 1869 and was elected to Congress again from 1885-1887. Lightly toned. Corners and edges gently worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
