ALLEN DRURY
The author congratulates Erika Holzer on her new book, Double Crossing
TLS: "Allen", 1p, 7¼x5¾. Tiburon, California, 1983 August 27. On his personal stationery
to author Erika Holzer. Begins: "Dear Erika". In full: "Congratulations on the good reception
for DOUBLE CROSSING, which I hope does very well for you. It will, I also hope, reach many
people who need to be informed. I only regret that I won't be able to attend the party in
October-I'll be over in Phoenix plugging my own DECISION-but I do appreciate the thought.
Don't worry about Kirkus, which is uniformly nasty to me too, and to many others. It's apparently
composed of a bunch of snot-nosed juvenile incompetents who get their kicks out of derogating their
betters-and you may quote me. They are regarded with almost universal contempt in the book
business. Best regards and good luck." ALLEN DRURY (1918-1998), a veteran journalist who
covered the U.S. Senate for "The New York Times", published 18 novels, including Advise
and Consent, which won the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and Decision (1983), a novel set
in the Supreme Court, and five nonfiction books. Lawyer turned author ERIKA HOLZER
wrote two novels, Double Crossing (1983), a human rights espionage drama, and Eye for an
Eye (1994), which was filmed in 1996. She sought endorsements for her 1983 novel from
prominent writers of the day. "Kirkus Reviews", founded in 1933, publishes pre-publication
reviews of more than 5,000 titles annually. The reviews, currently published 24 times each
year, are written by the firm's staff and freelance writers expert in fields including Fiction,
Mystery, Science Fiction, Foreign Language, Non-Fiction and Children's literature. Creased.
