ALLEN G. THURMAN
Signature of the Ohio Democrat and Vice Presidential nominee who
served as Senate President Pro Tem.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours Respectfully/A.G.
Thurman/Ohio", 4½x2¼. Ink note (unknown hand) in lower left: "Sen. 1880";
and on verso: "Pres. Pro Tem. 80". Allen Granbery THURMAN (1813-1895)
represented Ohio in the U.S. House (1845-1847) and Senate (1869-1871).
As US Senate President Pro Tem (1879-1880), he presided over the chamber
during the illness of Vice President William Wheeler. He served on the
Ohio Supreme Court (1852-1856), the last two years as its Chief Justice.
Thurman served on the 15-memberElectoral Commission chosen to resolve
the disputed Presidential election of 1876, but as a Democrat he was part of the
7-vote minority which lost every vote on disputed delegates. A candidate
for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1884, Thurman was tapped as
President Cleveland's running mate four years later. The
Cleveland-Thurman ticket received more popular votes than Republicans
Harrison-Morton (5.5 million to 5.4 million) but lost the election 233-168
electoral votes. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
