Photo by Elsa Dorfman with printed cursive caption shows Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky. GINSBERG (1926-1997), a Buddhist and critic of materialism and imperialism, was the "poet laureate" of the 1950s "Beat Generation" and spokesman for the counterculture of the 1960s. His poem "Howl" (1956) was vindicated in an obscenity trial and went on to great popularity. Another poetry collection, The Fall of America won the National Book Award (1974). Poet Peter ORLOVSKY was Ginsberg's companion for three decades from 1954 and close friend until Ginsberg's death. Ginsberg often employed the mantra "Ah," which he preferred to the more typical Buddhist "Om" because it ended with an open mouth, expressive of wonder and delight. Postmark slightly smudged.
