RAPHAEL SOYER and ALLEN GINSBERG
Ink signatures of both on a reproduction of a portrait of Ginsberg by Soyer
Illustration signed: "Raphael Soyer", "Allen Ginsberg", 3½x6¾ overall, image 2½x2¾, one surface. Printed number (134) at top edge. The illustration appears to be from an auction catalog. ALLEN GINSBERG (1926-1997), a Buddhist and critic of materialism, was the "poet laureate" of the 1950s "Beat Generation" and spokesman for the counterculture of the 1960s. His poem "Howl" (1956) was vindicated in an obscenity trial and went on to great popularity. Another poetry collection, The Fall of America, won the National Book Award (1974). RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987), the twin brother of artist Moses Soyer, had his first exhibition in America in 1926, fourteen years after they came to the U.S. from their native Russia. A social realist, Soyer believed in "painting people...in their natural context - who belong to their time". Best known for his paintings of ordinary men and women during the Great Depression, Raphael became known as "The Dean of American Realism". Soyer's made pencil and pastel portraits of Ginsberg circa 1965. Unrelated printing on verso, no show through. Fine condition.
