An original 20x7¾ 3-panel cartoon strip featuring Steve Roper and Mike Nomad, inscribed with holiday greetings
Inscribed original art signed: "With sincere Holiday greetings/to Stephen in 1976/Cordially/Allen Saunders", 20x7¼. 3-panel printed "Steve Roper" cartoon originally drawn by Saunders. (John) Allen Saunders (1899-1986) has been called "Dean of American Continuity Strips", having created two of the most enduring ones and ghost-written a third. Saunders wrote the scripts for these strips, employing others to draw them. In 1939, he took over and completely refashioned the strip Mary Worth, about an older woman who dispensed advise to troubled friends. The next year he created Steve Roper, a journalist who solved mysteries, pairing the college-educated Roper in 1954 with blue collar tough guy Mike Nomad. Saunders said his fan mail for Mary Worth was 90% female, that for Steve Roper and Mike Nomad 90% male. Saunders was also the un-credited story-writer on the Kerry Drake strip. Saunders retired in 1983, turning both strips over to his son, John (Phillip) Saunders. Roper/Nomad continued until John's death in 2003. Fold and creased in center. Tape on center. Pin hole in top margin. Corners and edges slightly worn and creased. Stray pencil markings from publication. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
