Hancock's wife!
Autograph Letter Unsigned: Two Pages. 5¼x7¾. In Part: Please say to Mr.
Griffin that I wish he would ask Mr. Edmunds if I might not select the mantles +
grates - they are so beautiful here + for cheap - comparatively. Also say to him that
I have made up my mind to burn "gas fire" in the parlor hall + dining room. It will
cost but one + half to two dollars a month to burn five hours each day”. Almira
Russell Hancock (1832-1893) married Winfield Scott Hancock in 1850. They
had two children, both of whom passed away before either of their parents. After
her husband's death in 1886, she published a book titled Reminiscences of
Winfield Scott Hancock. Lightly toned. Arithmetic notes at bottom of first page
in unknown hand. Mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
