Signature: "A. Johnston/G.C.E./6/1/46" in black ink. 4¼x2¾. Alvanley Johnston (1875-1951) was a Canadian-American locomotive engineer who was the head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, a union that covered Canada and the United States. He held the title of Grand Chief Engineer from 1925 to 1950 and during his tenure the Brotherhood not only recovered from financial problems, weathered the Great Depression and World War II but also held for higher wages and shorter hours in a nationwide strike in 1946.
