Signature: "A.A. Ranney/Boston Mass" in black ink. 3½x2. Ambrose Arnold Ranney
(1821-1899) was born in Townshend, Vermont . He graduated from Dartmouth College,
studied law in Woodstock, Vermont in 1844 and four years later he was admitted to the bar
and practiced in Boston. Ranney was in the corporation counsel for the city from 1855 to
1857. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1857, 1863 and
1864, and also served as a Republican in the 47th,48th, and 49th Congresses (1881-1887).
However, after failing reelection in 1886 to the 50th Congress, he resumed the practice of
law until his death. Toned. Left margin slightly frayed. Pencil and ink notations on verso
(unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
