AMELIA B. EDWARDS
Handwritten sentiment by the English novelist and Egyptologist
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Believe me/Yours very truly/Amelia B. Edwards", 4½x1½ strip, affixed to 9½x4 sheet. Ink caption (unknown hand) on mounting sheet. Amelia B. Edwards (1831-1892) published her first story at age 12, and was soon writing prolifically for magazines. Her popular novels included My Brother's Wife (1855), Barbara's History (1864) and Lord Brackenberry (1880), the latter running to 15 editions. A visit to Egypt in 1873-1874 aroused a deep interest in that country's history, and led to a best-selling travelogue, A Thousand Miles Up the Nile (1876). Thereafter she devoted most of her time to the study of ancient Egypt, and to monument preservation there. She bequeathed her collection of antiquities to University College London, and endowed a chair of Egyptian studies there. Toned. Heavily creased from adhesive. Ink bled but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
