Signature(s): "[1 line of untranslated Japanese characters]/Ryuji Takeuchi/Ambassador of Japan" and, on verso, "Amiya Chakravarty", both in blue ink. One unknown signer in blue ink. Blue ink notations on front and verso and black ink notations under Takeuchi's signature, all in unknown hand. 6¾x9¼, with rounded right corners. With small b/w newspaper photos and articles of all signers affixed. Indian author, literary critic and theologian AMIYA CHAKRAVARTY (1901-1986) was literary secretary and traveling companion of Rabindranath Tagore, winner of the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature, from 1924 to 1933; he edited a number of English translations of Tagore's writings. He was also an associate of Mahatma Gandhi and walked with him on the Salt March of 1930. Chakravarty later earned a Doctorate of Philosophy from Oxford University and taught at Selly Oak College in Birmingham, England, Calcutta University and Howard University. Among his best known works are Chalo Jai, which won a UNESCO prize, and Ghare Pherar Din, which won India's Sahitya Akademi Award. RYUJI TAKEUCHI was Japanese Ambassador to Germany and the United States. Lightly toned and creased. Show-through touches all signatures. Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
