AMLETO GIOVANNI CARDINAL CICOGNANI. Photograph signed: "A.G. Cardinal/Cicognani/Nov. 1, 1968". Color, 4¼x5¾. Lightly creased at lower left and upper right corners. Overall, fine condition. With transmittal card, unsigned, 5¾x4½. The Vatican City, 1968 November 4. Typed message, in full: "The Secretariat of State has pleasure in forwarding the enclosed photograph which has been signed by His Eminence the Cardinal Secretary of State." Slightly creased. Fine condition. Signed the year before Cardinal Cicognani retired from his position as Cardinal Secretary of State (1961-1969). Italian-born Amleto Giovanni Cicognani (1883-1973), who had been ordained a Priest in 1905, was the Apostolic Delegate to the United States for 25 years, beginning in 1933. In 1958, he was elevated to Cardinal, the position held by his brother, Gaetano, who had become a Cardinal in 1953. A prominent member of the Roman Curia in the Vatican City, Cardinal Cicognani participated in the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), and he was a member of the Papal Conclave that elected Pope Paul VI (1963). In 1972, the year before his death, Cardinal Cicognani was elected Dean of the College of Cardinals. Two items.
