Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) played and coached football for 71 years. He was 98 years old
when he retired from coaching. He played at Yale and made the original All-America football
team in 1889. Stagg became the Coach of the University of Chicago "Maroons" in 1892,
and, as was allowable then, he also played on the team. He coached Chicago to six Big-Ten
Championships in the Western Conference (1899, 1905, 1907, 1908, 1913, and 1924)
and a tie in 1922; teams went undefeated for two of those seasons (1905, 1913). In 1933,
Stagg assumed the coaching position at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Stagg is credited with the use of dummies for tackling practice and introducing the
end-around play, the shift and the man in motion. He also developed the huddle! Staggwas the first to be named to the Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach
(1951). Fine condition. Matted by unknown individual.
