Autograph Note Signed: "A A Stagg" beneath Typed Letter Signed: "A.M. Weyand", 1p, 7x10½. Cornwall on Hudson, New York, 1953 July 25. TO AMOS ALONZO STAGG. In full: "I am still working on my history of football. It is almost finished. I thought that it would be of interest were I to include statistics pertaining to the leading players of each year. I note a curious discrepancy in the listing of your height. The Yale News gave it as 5 feet 3 3/4 inches and the New York Herald as 5 feet 10 inches. Please tell me how tall you were in 1889." Amos Alonzo Stagg has underlined "almost finished" and drawn a line from it to "Congratulations!/Bill me for a copy." He has underlined 1889 drawing a line to "5'6"". The Saga Of American Football by Alexander M. Weyand was published in 1955. Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) played and coached football for 71 years. He was 98 years old when he retired as a football coach from Stockton Junior College on September 16, 1960. He played at Yale and made the original All-America football team in 1889. Stagg is credited with the use of dummies for tackling practice and introducing (at the University of Chicago) the end-around play, the shift and the man in motion. Stagg was 102 when he died.
