AMOS ALONZO STAGG
Amos Alonzo Stagg sends a typed letter about Chicago.
Typed Letter Signed: "Amos Alonzo Stagg", 1p, 6x8. Stockton, California, 1959 August 5. To Arthur B. Kelley, East Orange, New Jersey. In full: "Many thanks for your good letter with so many interesting comments on the days of your boyhood on the south side of Chicago. You brought back many pleasant memories of the early part of our forty-one years at the University of Chicago. We have been in Stockton, California, now for over twenty-five years and understand that great changes are happening in Hyde Park and particularly along 55th Street. This has all come about in the last four years since we were back there. You are now living in East Orange only a few miles from where I was born at 384 Valley Road, West Orange. I presume there have been vast changes in the Oranges which were quite familiar to me during my growing up period. Thanks again for writing, Gratefully," Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) played and coached football for 71 years. He was 98 years old when he retired as a football coach from Stockton Junior College on September 16, 1960. He played at Yale and made the original All-America football team in 1889. Stagg is credited with the use of dummies for tackling practice and introducing (at the University of Chicago) the end-around play, the shift and the man in motion. Stagg was 102 when he died. Lightly creased. Erased pencil notes at upper margin. Vertical fold touches "m" in Amos.
