AMOS ALONZO STAGG
Amos Alonzo Stagg sends a typed letter to Alexander M. Weyand about his book being published The Saga Of American Football in 1955.
Typed Letter Signed: "A.A. Stagg", 1p, 6x6¾. Stockton, California, 1954 November 20. To Colonel A.A. Weyand, Cornwall on Hudson, New York. In full: "Thank you for your letter of November 15th. I am glad that you will have your football book published next Fall. In 1953, I was invited to help in coaching Stockton Junior College - not the College of the Pacific. My duties covered coaching punters and place kickers and helping on forward passing and serving in an advisory capacity. I am serving in an advisory capacity in 1954. This happens to be my 65th year of coaching. I was glad to hear such good news about Henry Twombly. With many good wishes, Sincerely," The Saga Of American Football by Alexander M. Weyand was published in 1955. Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) played and coached football for 71 years. He was 98 years old when he retired as a football coach from Stockton Junior College on September 16, 1960. He played at Yale and made the original All-America football team in 1889. Stagg is credited with the use of dummies for tackling practice and introducing (at the University of Chicago) the end-around play, the shift and the man in motion. Stagg was 102 when he died.
