The U.S. Senator from Wisconsin and U.S. Congressman from New York sign a 6½x3½ page, in iron gall ink
Signatures: "Amos J. Cummings/Feb 3 -99 N.Y." and "JV Quarles/Wisconsin/Dec 18/99" in iron gall ink, 6½x3½ page. With an unidentified signature on verso. Amos J. Cummings (1838-1902) received the Congressional Medal of Honor for brave conduct as a Union soldier during the Battle of Fredericksburg (1863). A journalist who served as Horace Greeley's night editor, Cummings spent his later years representing New York as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives (1887-1902). Joseph V. Quarles (1843-1911), a Union Army soldier during the Civil War, was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Republican from Wisconsin and served from March 4, 1899 to March 3, 1905. He later served as the U.S. district court judge for the eastern district of Wisconsin from 1905 until his death. Lightly soiled. Pencil notes (unknown hand) not affecting signatures. Lightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
