AMY BEACH
3x4 sepia photo, signed in the lower margin in 1940
Photograph signed: "With every good wish/Mrs. H. H. A. Beach/New York, April 25/40". Sepia, 3x4¼. Amy Beach (1867-1944), born Amy Cheney, was a child prodigy who gave her first piano recital at age 7 and soloed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1883. Following her marriage to Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach in1885, she focused on composition. From the first performance of a Beach composition, her "Mass in E-Flat Major", by the Handel and Haydn Society in 1892, she was recognized as America's foremost female composer. While she composed both classical and sacred music, and one opera, Cabildo (1932) she was best known by the public for her popular songs, including "The Year's at the Spring." Her compositions numbered over 150. She also wrote a book on the study of music. After her husband's death in 1910, she resumed concert performances, touring Europe to much acclaim. Health problems compelled her retirement in 1940, the year she signed this photo. Unknown residue on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
